You will notice that Agave Syrup is not listed here as though it is has been touted a healthy and vegan-friendly sweetener, as it has a very low glycemic index due to its largely fructose makeup which is the single most damaging form of sugar when used as a sweetener. Fructose found naturally in fruit is perfectly healthy when you eat it as whole foods as it comes with a host of fibre, vitamins and antioxidants. But when it’s commercial extracted into a syrup, it wreaks havoc on the body even more so than white table sugar and high fructose corn syrup. Agave syrup is a triumph of marketing over science. Yes it has a low GI but then so does liquid petroleum, it doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Stick to sweeteners like raw honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar, rapadura and stevia.
